How to Adapt Your Business to Survive with the Times

Each of us has seen companies go out of business, even more in the recent years. Many businesses that have survived have done so because they have adapted to the current market. These adaptations are sometimes changes to existing products and services being offered. Other times, companies change their marketing strategy to sell their products to an entirely new group of customers.

In more extreme situations, businesses will take on an entirely new product line or offer a brand new type of service – sometimes without having experience or knowledge in their new endeavor. This, of course, can be a risky business decision, but smart business owners are using the resources they already have to make these ventures less risky.

For example, we are seeing more and more farmers converting their farms into bed and breakfast accommodations. The farm cannot make enough money to survive, so rather than throwing in the towel, ranchers and growers are adapting their businesses to be more profitable – using the resources they already have.

This movement has become so common, in fact, that this “line of work” has earned its own name: agritourism.

Now, most farmers don’t have experience in tourism or in the hospitality field. However, their ranch property and knowledge in farm activities gives them the resources change their business and add on an entirely new source of revenue.

If your business is struggling, the answer may not necessarily be to lower prices, work longer hours or cut staff. The solution may be right in front of you: how can you use your existing resources to adapt to the needs of the market and add on an entirely new source of revenue?
